NEW YORK, September 28th, 2012 – Restaurant Associates (RA) in collaboration with Marcus Samuelsson Group (MSG) are pleased to announce the opening of American Table Cafe and Bar by Marcus Samuelsson (1941 Broadway at 65th St). Located in Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, American Table celebrates the diversity of American cuisine, drawing on influences and regions from across the country. Award-winning chef and best-selling author Marcus Samuelsson along with Nils Norén, MSG’s Vice President of Restaurant Operations, oversee the menu which is executed by executive chef Charlene Johnson-Hadley. Open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., the café will also serve a creative cocktail menu designed by consulting master mixologist, Eben Klemm.
“To me, Lincoln Center symbolizes New York City’s passion for culture and performance,” says Samuelsson. “As a lover of the arts, I am honored to showcase the diversity of the American dining scene at this iconic institution.”
Samuelsson, multiple James Beard Foundation Award-winner and the chef/owner of New York City’s Red Rooster Harlem and Ginny’s Supper Club tapped Charlene Johnson-Hadley to lead day-to-day operations of the kitchen at American Table Cafe and Bar. Having risen through the kitchen ranks at Red Rooster Harlem, where she started as a line cook, Johnson-Hadley joins other long-time Marcus Samuelsson Group employees, including American Table Cafe and Bar’s general manager Reggie Larose, previously of Red Rooster Harlem, August and Aquavit, and kitchen director Nils Norén, who has worked alongside Samuelsson for over ten years.
The diverse menu offers a wide selection, from light snacks to heartier meals and desserts. Celebrating the American culinary landscape, American Table’s menu draws on diverse inspirations, from classic American favorites to ethnic offerings. Dishes include Tacos Doro Wat, a nod to Samuelsson’s Ethiopian heritage, pulled chicken served with egg and chives; Scallop Sausage Curry Stew, with water chestnuts and charred scallions; and a Turkey Meatball Sandwich, with cranberry sauce and dipping mushroom gravy. The dessert menu features classics updated with whimsical twists, such as Spiced Bread Pudding with salted caramel sauce and whipped cream; and American Table Chocolate Cupcake; as well as a selection of macarons from Dana’s Bakery.
American Table Cafe and Bar’s beverage menu features a selection of wines, beers and cocktails as well as non-alcoholic cold drinks, coffee and tea including Ambessa, Samuelsson’s own range of four teas developed in partnership with Harney & Sons. Created by Eben Klemm, the cocktail selection showcases libations such as the Fife & Drum, Bicardi Light rum and Ambessa Lingonberry Green tea; Minuet, Beefeater gin, lavender syrup and lemon juice; and Hudson Sunset, grüet brut, grapefruit juice, kirsch and grenadine.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the designers of the Lincoln Center Redevelopment Project which includes the new, critically acclaimed Alice Tully Hall, have transformed the 75-seat space, where at65 cafe was previously located. The design of American Table Cafe and Bar by Marcus Samuelsson features an intimate space for dining and socializing, with a large communal table surrounded by convertible two-tops and inviting armchairs. A custom-made rug frames the entire dining area and is woven in the produce-inspired orange, green and brown hues that are echoed throughout the space. The design draws its inspiration from the café’s culinary focus, and offers a unique dining experience through the eclectic reinterpretation of Americana.
