Letter from Dick Cattani to All RA Team Members Addressing Equality
I am angered by the death of George Floyd and the ongoing brutality and injustices faced by Black people. I am also hopeful with the many peaceful protests across the country that a better society will emerge.
Our Black community is hurting. We must take a stronger, proactive stand against racism, violence and social injustice. Everyone needs to feel protected, safe and free.
At RA, we reject racism. We are a company founded on the values of respect and inclusion. We believe that no matter a person's race, we all have the potential to succeed. While I am proud to work for this company because its leadership lives these values, in full transparency, I also believe we - I - haven't done enough.
I don't have all the answers, but I give you my commitment to do more. Starting now.
First we will listen. Listen to the pain, anger, confusion and helplessness that our Black colleagues are expressing. We will seek to acknowledge their pain and learn about their struggles. Then we can act. We must break this vicious cycle together, by holding hands and no longer standing by in silence.
Within the next few days we will identify an organization that tackles racism, injustice and poverty in the Black community and we will support as a company to heal and provide opportunities.
As our action plans continue to evolve, we hope that these initial steps will help push conversations forward and usher in positive changes.
I'm reminded of a quote by Nelson Mandela: "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his or her skin or background or religion. People must learn to hate and if they can learn to hate, they can be TAUGHT TO LOVE, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
I welcome you reaching out to me with your thoughts, suggestions and recommendations. Please know I, and the rest of our leadership team, CARE. I wish you and your loved ones safety, health and strength.
